Travel woes for passengers passing through the notorious Abderdeen Tunnel may ease a bit once the long-awaited MTR South Island Line’s launch before end of the year takes place.
Imagine travel time from Admiralty to Ocean Park, which will have its own station like rival Hong Kong Disneyland, cut to four minutes from the current 30 minutes via Citybus’s dedicated bus route 629. The 7-kilometer HK$16.9-billion line extension will commence from Admiralty, which will become more busy transfer hub for three MTR lines and added three extra levels as it increases its floor area from the current 9,000 square meters to 20,000 square meters. Meanwhile, Admiralty to South Horizons, the line’s other end, is estimated to last 11 minutes.
The South Island line was initially scheduled to open in December last year, but the MTR announced in November 2014 that the opening would be pushed back six months due to excavation difficulties at Admiralty station.
Last year, the opening was again postponed, this time to the end of this year.
